Anthem Inc. recently announced it would buy Cigna Corp, for about $54.2 billion, creating the largest U.S. health insurer by membership and accelerating the industry's consolidation from five national players to three. The proposed acquisition, the health insurance industry's largest, comes three weeks after Aetna Inc. agreed to buy Humana Inc. for $37 billion. Read more.
Since 2009, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has been cracking down on misclassification of workers. The DOL has just issued another document that confirms its determination to enforce those provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Internal Revenue Code that require employers to do the following for employees (but theoretically not for independent contractors). The Affordable Care Act (ACA) added new employer reporting requirements under Internal Revenue Code (Code) Sections 6055 and 6056. These new requirements apply to employers that sponsor self-insured plans that provide minimum essential coverage (which includes employer sponsored coverage, COBRA coverage and retiree coverage) regardless of size, and applicable larger employers (ALEs).
